Look a little closer, however, and things become more interesting. The boots worn by the two stars may look like models available in shops, but that does not necessarily mean they are identical to the retail versions.

Messi is wearing the adidas F50 Messi Elite.
The F50 is adidas’ speed-focused football boot family and has a long connection with Messi. He wore earlier versions of the F50 during the beginning of his international career, including at his first World Cup in 2006.
For the 2026 tournament, adidas has released a special Messi edition inspired by Argentina and his World Cup history.
The retail F50 Messi Elite is a lightweight, close-fitting boot designed for acceleration and quick changes of direction. However, that does not automatically mean Messi’s match-worn pair is constructed exactly like the version available to the public.
Are Messi’s F50 Boots Customized?
They may be.
Top professional players can receive boots adjusted to their preferred fit, soleplate, upper feel or internal construction. These changes are not always visible from the outside.
A boot can therefore look like the latest retail F50 while including elements that have been modified specifically for the player.
This is particularly relevant with Messi, who has worn adidas boots for many years and will have developed very precise preferences regarding fit and feel.
Which Football Boots Is Ronaldo Wearing?
Cristiano Ronaldo is wearing the Nike Mercurial Superfly 11.
The Mercurial has been associated with Ronaldo throughout most of his career. It is Nike’s speed-oriented boot family and is known for its close fit, lightweight construction and aggressive appearance.
The Superfly 11 is the high-cut version of Nike’s latest Mercurial generation. Unlike earlier generations where the Superfly and Vapor were very similar, Nike has given the latest models different upper and soleplate constructions.
Ronaldo has been seen in the new Superfly 11 World Cup generation, while special CR7 colourways may also appear during the tournament.
Are Ronaldo’s Mercurials Customized?
As with Messi, Ronaldo may wear a personally adjusted version of the retail-looking boot.
Professional footballers can be extremely particular about details such as:
- Heel lockdown
- Upper softness
- Stud configuration
- Soleplate stiffness
- Internal padding
- Overall foot volume
The outside may promote the latest Mercurial Superfly, while parts of the internal construction could still be adapted to Ronaldo’s preferences.
Messi F50 vs Ronaldo Mercurial: What Is the Difference?
Both are marketed as speed boots, but they do not fit or feel exactly the same.
The adidas F50 generally has a lightweight, streamlined construction with a relatively close fit through the midfoot. The Nike Mercurial is also designed for a close, responsive feel and has traditionally been associated with narrower or lower-volume feet.
That does not mean every player with narrow feet will prefer the Mercurial, or that every standard-width player will find the F50 comfortable.
Toe-box shape, heel shape, midfoot volume and upper flexibility can be just as important as forefoot width.
